Invece lui mi mise subito a mio agio.
Buona visione a tutti!!!

The third title of the “Puccini cycle” in Antwerp with the direction of Robert Carsen is MANON LESCAUT; which saw me protagonist this time with the absolute debut in the role of Des Grieux. I loved this role right since the first time I listened it in the edition directed by Perlea with the great Jussi Bjorling and Licia Albanese. The year before this important debut I had met the great Franco Corelli in New York thanks to the help of a Columbia Artists agent, Joel Boch: Franco was my MYTH and I knew that he was very reserved and that it was not easy to get to know him and above all being able to study with him. He welcomed me to his home in NY on the 17J floor (I still remember it) in the mid-90s … I can’t forget the moment he opened the door and I found myself in front of him: my legs suddenly collapsed and I said embarrassed “This is the most beautiful day of my life”. For me it was like being in front of a MONUMENT. He smiled and said a simple “Ma dai …” he tooked my hand and let me in. He immediately put me at ease. He immediately put me at ease.
MANON LESCAUT was an opera that Corelli never sang on stage but he loved very much: we studied many parts of the opera together and later he was very proud of my debut that I told him in detail, making him listen to all the audio of the first performance. At the time I didn’t have the video yet. Certainly the role of Des Grieux is one of the most demanding of the Puccini repertoire but I must say that since that debut in Antwerp it is also one of the role that has given me the greatest satisfactions. Statistically I sang it for 66 performances in 17 different productions. Robert Carsen’s production is in my opinion beautiful and impressive with the same collaborators as his legendary MEFISTOFELE. I resumed this production a few years later also at the Opera de Paris Bastille always with Miriam Gauci, splendid protagonist, great artist and friend. The orchestral conducting was entrusted to another great friend: Maestro Evelino Pidò .
Happy viewing everyone !!!
